Certified Registrars
CIRA Certified Registrars simply act as agents for CIRA. Registrars are approved by CIRA to register Canadian Domains, and interact with CIRA to maintain records for Domains on the customer's behalf. Registrars can update records, for example DNS server information, administrative and technical contacts, as well as complete domain renewals and domain transfer requests.
To register a .CA name you need to select a CIRA Certified Registrar whom you would like communicate through to CIRA. Once you have selected a Registrar, you will communicate all your requests to this Registrar who will communicate directly with CIRA.
DOMAINScanada.ca is a CIRA Certified Registrar for domain registration, domain transfer, and domain renewals.
When you register a .ca with a CIRA Certified Registrar, they become the registrar for that domain, and only that Registrar can make updates to your records for that domain. (So if you register with company A you must continue to deal with company A for future updates) You are able to transfer that domain to an alternate registrar who would then become the registrar for that domain. There is only 1 registrar at any given time that can make changes to your domain records.
There are over 100 CIRA Certified Registrars listed on CIRA's website (Jan 2011).
If you're searching for a new CIRA Certified Registrar to Transfer your domains to, DOMAINScanada.ca accepts domain transfers, and does not charge a fee for this. You do need to renew the domain for at least 1 year at the time of transfer, however you are only paying for the domain renewal, the transfer is done free of charge.
